Movie & Soundtrack: Le comte de monte cristo, a real opéra.

It's sad. It's epic. It’s sublime.

Sometimes, composers are allowed to ratatouille* their way and experiment things.

This score is not just there to compliment the movie, it is an integral part of it.

People involved in this movie called Mr. Jérôme Rebotier. And they asked him to cook us an opera.

And he did. It’s delicious.

The whole soundtrack is 1h35 minutes long. Madness.

So. Much. Music.

It’s wonderful!

Le comte de Monte Christo story is not exactly happy and cute.

What does a man do when he has lost everything? When he gave up on life, yet is still living? It's consuming. It's hate. It's hope.

A lot of contradictory feelings.

It is a strange cocktail, definitely not easy to score.

The soundtrack translates those feelings very well.

The dominant emotions are to me:

Sadness, Hope and Anger.

The orchestration is ambitious. Again: 1h35 of music!!!!

It's classical Hollywood style, with a lot of strings, some accent horns, and an epic chord progression. At times, even reminiscent of requiem pieces. The melody of the main theme is epic 101.

The tremolo on the strings gives me goosebumps. It made me think a little bit of how Ramin Djawadi worked on his cellos for the GOT soundtrack.

What is clear with this score is that the drama is there. THE WHOLE TIME. It gives you no time to catch your breath.

Is this movie long? Ahahah. Yes. 3 hours. It is definitely a commitment.

But it worth it.

Just watch it if you think you have problems in your life.

You might realise you’re fine.

It might be the catharsis you didn’t know you needed.

* To Ratatouille: Completely made-up word based on the best movie of all time, meaning to try to mix a bunch of things, to create magic and experience it to the fullest.
